Caring for the pets you care for

Health Care:  Equine

We recommend the following vaccines for our equine clients:

EWT  is a vaccine for viral Eastern Encephalitis, Western Encephalitis, and Tetanus.

Flu / Rhino  is a vaccine for viral respiratory infections and abortion in mares.  Very contagious.

Strangles  (coommonly called "distemper") is a vaccine for bacterial infection with swollen glands under the jaw or upper neck.  Young, old, and "never exposed before" horses get the sickest.  Some will die.

Potomac  is a vaccine for a tick-carried disease that causes leg swelling.  HOrses get very sick, and some die.  It is common east of the Mississippi River and is scattered throughout the United States.

West Nile  is a vaccine for a virus transmitted horse to horse through mosquitoes.  It causes neurological symptoms that, without prompt intervention, can be permanent or result in the death of the horse.

Rabies  is a vaccine for a virus transmitted to mammals through saliva.  Once symptoms appear, it is always fatal.  It can be transmitted to humans.

We also provide Coggins testing for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) which is also known as "swamp fever".   Proof of a negative Coggins test is frequently required for trail rides and competitions with good reason.  No horse ever recovers from EIA, and no effective vaccine or treatment has been found.
