Question: Should my dog/cat have a litter before she is spayed?
Answer: No. It is not necessary for a female to have a litter to be a good family pet. Maturity and being a part of the family group will create the pet you have been looking for.
Question: My dog/cat is in heat. Can she be spayed while she is in heat?
Answer: Yes, a female can be spayed while she is in season but special precautions will need to be taken. For example, she must be kept quiet and protected from males for seven to ten days after the surgery. The female cannot get pregnant after the surgery but if a male breeds the female, sutures tying off blood vessels could be broken and potential life-threatening bleeding could occur. We recommend spaying as early as 4 months of age, hopefully before she comes in heat.
